A CLOSER LOOK

Design connectivity around the space and the work.

Understand the physical and operational environment

Network planning starts with the site: floor layout, construction materials, existing cabling, equipment locations and the areas where people actually work. The number of devices matters, but so do their applications and the way they connect. Video meetings, shared equipment and guest access can create different demands.

For an office move or expansion, confirm internet-service availability and installation lead times early. The network design and the move schedule need to account for dependencies that sit outside the organization’s direct control.

Define the connections and boundaries

The plan should identify wired connections, wireless coverage requirements, equipment placement and the intended separation between business and guest use. Access rules should follow the purpose of each connection rather than accumulate as undocumented exceptions.

Equipment decisions should consider capacity, compatibility, manageability, support arrangements and replacement cycles. A documented design makes it easier to understand why a device is needed and how it fits into the wider environment.

Plan validation before installation

Agree the acceptance checks in advance. These can include coverage in the required areas, connectivity to business applications, access to shared devices and the behavior of guest connections. Testing should reflect the workflows that matter to the business rather than stop at confirming that a device powers on.

Any unresolved issues should have a named owner and a next step. Changes made during installation should be reflected in the final records so that the documentation matches what is actually in place.

Leave a usable network record

A handover can include a network diagram, device inventory, connection labels, vendor contacts and configuration ownership. Credentials should be transferred through an agreed secure method, never embedded in a public document or ordinary website inquiry.
